What to Expect From a Contact Lens Exam
Getting contact lenses requires more than a standard vision test. A complete contact lens prescription includes several additional measurements and evaluations to ensure the lenses fit your eyes properly and function effectively.
This is how it is done at Astoria Park Eyecare:
- Full Eye Exam
It begins with a comprehensive eye exam to ascertain your vision requirements and eliminate conditions like dry eye, corneal irregularities, or infection affecting contact lens wear. - Measurement of the Cornea
With a corneal topographer or keratometer, we measure the curvature of your cornea. This enables us to select contact lenses that will fit appropriately with your eye's shape so you can see clearly and not feel discomfort. - Tear Film Analysis
Intrinsic tear production is essential for fitting the contact lens easily. We examine the volume and quality of tears to evaluate whether any conditions can result in dryness or irritation with lens wear. - Lens Fitting
We set up the correct lens type based on your eye size measurements and vision correction needs. You will wear trial lenses in our office so that we can check the fit and acuity of your vision. We make adjustments if needed before finalizing your prescription. - Vision Testing With Lenses
We perform a vision test with trial lenses to check the prescription and ensure no discomfort, redness, or poor fitting. - Lens Training and Care
Initial wearers undergo on-eye training to learn how to insert, remove, and properly care for lenses. Correct hygiene and replacement schedules are also explained to enhance eye care and health. - Follow-Up Visit
Further, follow-up is required to monitor how the eyes adapt to the contact lens. Based on one's follow-up evaluation, we make changes in fit or prescription as necessary.
Types of Contact Lenses We Prescribe
Astoria Park Eyecare offers a full range of soft and specialty contact lenses for all ages. We will help you choose lenses based on your visual needs, eye shape, and wear schedule during your visit.
Common lens types are:
- Daily Disposable Lenses
Ideal for active lifestyles or patients with allergies or dryness issues. Used once and discarded, offering a clean, fresh lens every day. - Biweekly and Monthly Lenses
Designed for repeated wear with proper cleaning and storage, it is less costly and has a wide range of prescription powers. - Toric Lenses
Designed for astigmatism patients, toric lenses are of a special shape to correct blurred or distorted vision. - Multifocal Lenses
These lenses offer clear vision at different distances and suit patients with presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). - Extended Wear Lenses
Some lenses are worn at night and can be worn for a week. These are prescribed only after a thorough evaluation of your eye condition. - Colored and Cosmetic Lenses
Prescription and over-the-counter color lenses are also available for individuals who want to change the color of their eyes. - Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) and Specialty Lenses
We offer keratoconus or irregular corneas solutions, including scleral and hybrid lenses.
Contact Lenses for Children and Teenagers
We offer safe and comfortable lens solutions for children and teenagers. Many young patients capitalize on daily disposable lenses for school, sports, or parties. We also offer myopia control treatments, such as specialty soft lenses that gradually slow down the progression of nearsightedness in children.
Dr. Shetty guides children and parents through fitting and provides age-specific guidelines for care to establish good habits from the very start.
